Lineaby James Van Vossel
LINEA consists of two glass discs which are supported together on three white wooden pegs which allow them to independently rotate in situ. The wooden pegs both hold the discs apart and keep them aligned parallel to each other. Whilst the front disc is transparent the one behind is mirrored and each one has a series of apparently hand-painted wavy lines screen printed across some of its surface. These lines make patterns which change as one or other of the discs is rotated. Like ripples spreading across a pond, the distance between the lines gradually increases, the intersections change and new patterns emerge. Sometimes reinforcing by coinciding with each other, other times creating tension, a new direction and focus or a sense of openness. This interplay gives the possibility to personalize the mirror and make it unique. This is the distinctive signature of Linea.
Each wooden pegs is attached to the wall with one single sturdy screw.
The design arose from James' fascination with the elusive nature of a mirror. After all, a mirror is more than a reflective surface: it is glass with a reflective layer on the back, where both the thickness of the glass and the pattern applied to it subtly influence what we perceive. By dividing the mirror into two separate plates, the designer invites the user to be an active part of that experience.
